Welcome
Hi my name is R J Braunton I am a Wood sculptor and Artist from North Devon England, I Started Wood sculpture in 1962 at 10 years old and started to paint at about the same time. I love wood with a passion. I like to produce natural pleasing forms with individuality, every piece made using my own hands, I like natural forms from nature allowing the timber to unfold it’s own beauty, every piece is unique and one of a kind my work reflects aspects of nature as I see them, I just want to make beautiful things that bring people pleasure I use drift wood, wind blown and fallen or recycled wood.
Wood sculpture
Welcome to my sculptures web page. My wood sculptures are created from many different types of fallen timber and driftwood. Any interesting timber I can find after the winter storms have taken their toll is my starting point. l love to create something that is different and unusual that people will remember. I hope you enjoy my work because it’s something that isn’t found in the everyday walk of life and cannot be bought in the shops. Please take a few moments to look around and just check out something a little different.
Mixed media
I suppose I have to call myself an artists but I have never been to art collage or had any kind of formal art training in any form, everything I have learnt I Have worked out for myself over the years.
It’s been over 45 years since I first started to painted with oils and now I have started to combine art forms that I am passionate about and to produce a form of art that reflects the fact that I have spent most of my life on and around the beach.
I never use other people’s images or ideas, everything I use to make art I create myself or are gifts from nature.
My inspiration comes from nature, mostly from the ocean and the beach or when walking across the headland and fields, I see designs and patterns everywhere in nature. Listen with care when out walking because sounds have patterns within them, even the wind and rain is incredibly creative, if you train yourself you can learn to translate these elements to a point of almost understanding them.
I have always loved the ocean and seeing the pleasure that people get from just being by the sea, the beach brings people together it’s a place of fun and games a place were anyone can experience all the raw elements of wind rain and of course wonderful sunshine. I tend to work in the first instance with a sketch pad and water colour to capture the moment in time – the colour – light – texture and the feel of the moment and then I use this to recreate in oil paint on canvas or in my more recent work mixed media including paper, wood, stone, glass and many more materials that I can use to get the effects I want.
